Being severely behind in updating the recent races I'm going to go back to June 20th, the 61st annual Piston Run race in Chilliwack BC.  The Piston Run has a reputation for being a tight, technical, gnarly race, and this year was no different.  Organizers and BC off-road legends Wally Klammer and Chris Carey put their evil minds together and delivered a race that would have people talking for years to come!  I entered the Intermediate class and had hopes of a podium finish to continue my pattern from races previous.  Normally I feel that the tougher races like the Piston Run are more catered to me than the faster open races, but something was off this year, and I didn't make out as well as I had hoped.  Each lap was 37 kilometers and took on average about an hour to two hours for most people to finish.  I made two laps within the 3 hour cut off time and finished in a respectable 8th place out of around 20 racers.  Although I finished farther back than I wanted, I came away with some of my fondest racing memories of the season!  There's nothing quite like inching your way along an 18 inch wide trail cut into a steep coastal rainforest mountain side while your bark buster lightly scrapes against the rock wall on your right and your front tire wavers precariously close to the edge of the trail that leads to a 300 foot drop straight down.  If that wasn't enough, half way through the trail it makes a slow left hand turn through a gully that is bridged by a 2 foot wide aluminum bridge with no guard rails!  Don't fall!! Little Orange Forest Creature ran beautifully and handled excellent through the nasty conditions and I finished the day feeling like I had accomplished something great!  No one usually complains after the Piston Run no matter how hard it was in order to keep their pride intact.  The course is completely marked, cut and pre-ridden by guys who are probably more than triple the age of a lot of racers, and they'll be the first to point that out if any whiners decide to get vocal!  The PNWMA series took a few week hiatus after the Piston Run and the next race for me will be the Canadian Enduro Championship rounds in Coleman Alberta, and Penticton British Columbia which I will have news about soon!  Thanks for reading!
